We focus on several areas while investing in local communities, where education remains the key one. We’ve chosen education not only because of its role in creating modern society but also in response to the needs of local communities and local authorities. Over 70 educational projects implemented in primary and secondary schools, universities but also in kindergartens and nurseries make ArcelorMittal Poland not only a very active member of local life but also the supporter of educational activities in Silesia, Malopolska and Opolszczyzna regions.

Investments in new technologies

In frames of cooperation with schools we’ve opened several dozen of multimedia laboratories equipped with hi-tech IT infrastructure such as interactive boards, computers and projectors. These modern classrooms are used for teaching foreign languages, IT, culture, economics and other classes. We create such labs in cities where our plants are located – Dąbrowa Górnicza, Kraków, Sosnowiec, Chorzów, Świętochłowice and Zdzieszowice. Cooperation with the Jagiellonian University resulted in the creation of an IT lab and language lab, the AGH University was able to create and equip a new room in the Centre of Technology Transfer. Moreover, info-kiosks were installed at AGH: one can take a “virtual walk” around the University and find the most useful information about the place.

Language education as the priority

We endowed modern language laboratories in primary and secondary schools in Dąbrowa Górnicza, Kraków, Sosnowiec, Świętochłowice, Chorzów and Zdzieszowice. We also cooperate with the University of Economics in Katowice in frames of the Foreign Languages Festival, during which students from the whole country can check their language skills.

Responding to the beneficiaries’ needs

Since 2011 we’ve focused on schools for handicapped children, pre-school education as well as on integrated educational centres. We supported them not only by purchasing multimedia aids or IT hardware, but above all we helped them to create specialized classrooms for the disabled children. Rehabilitation equipment, ball pits, sensory rooms are the examples of such investments. To mention just one of them specifically, we helped to create the sound therapy room in Special Education School Complex no. 4 in Sosnowiec. The disabled children learn there how to understand and respond to the surrounding world based on sound stimuli. While listening to sounds, the children are able to assess, for instance, not only how far they are from an incoming bus but also from which direction it is coming. The sound therapy room, which is an innovation at the European level, is the result of cooperation with the Institute of Acoustics of the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań, which granted access to its audio library and Poznań University of Technology, which designed and created the room.

Everything what schools require

In our cooperation with educational institutions we focus not only on helping in buying the required equipment but also we respond to other needs of schools and kindergartens. Therefore we devote money on one hand to new labs and on the other to infrastructure – we help in classrooms, toilets and roof renovation, we build fences and install air conditioning in IT laboratories. We’ve also supported the construction of new multipurpose sports field in Primary School no 2 in Zdzieszowice.

International standards

As the international company we attach importance to recognized standards in education. Hence the idea arose to promote international examination for the secondary-school certificate. In 2011 ArcelorMittal Foundation established cooperation with International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) and started the programme “Teaching and learning in international perspective” in frames of which teachers from 5 schools in Kraków were couched for caring out international examination for the secondary-school certificate. 30 teachers were trained during 9-month series of online courses, lessons with IBO experts, workshops and visits in educational centres which have already implemented the project. There are only 31 schools in Poland which can organize international examination for the secondary-school certificate and globally there are 2 050 institutions in 125 countries who can conduct the courses.

Education in every age

In response to the needs of older generations, we’ve supported the “Third Age University” organized at Kraków University of Economics.
