Huta Katowice is 50 years old. Anniversary celebrations in front of the monument

The former Huta Katowice, now a branch of ArcelorMittal Poland in Dąbrowa Górnicza, remains the largest metallurgical plant in the country and the only place in Poland where steel is still produced in blast furnaces. Today, on 15 April, Zagłębie and Silesia celebrate an important anniversary - it was on 15 April 1972 that the construction of the Katowice Steelworks began. This year's celebrations have a special dimension - 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of the metallurgical plant. It was then, on December 3, 1976, that the first pig iron flowed from blast furnace No. 1. On this occasion, the SITPH branch in Dąbrowa Górnicza, together with ArcelorMittal Poland, representatives of local authorities, former and current employees and all those who are close to the history of Huta Katowice, celebrated the anniversary of the start of the construction of the plant. Flowers were laid in front of the monument commemorating the throwing of the first shovel.

The ceremony in front of the monument was attended by, among m.in, representatives of the Polish Parliament, the President and Vice-President of Dąbrowa Górnicza, representatives of the Sosnowiec City Hall, the President of the Board of SITPH in Poland and the President and Vice-President of the Dąbrowa branch of SITPH. Among the gathered there were representatives of the management of ArcelorMittal Poland, metallurgical trade unions, former presidents of Huta Katowice and councillors, representatives of companies and institutions cooperating with the Dąbrowa steelworks, as well as the media.

"Today, as ArcelorMittal Poland, we are proud to continue this tradition, because Huta Katowice is more than just a production plant. These are primarily people who, with their hard work and commitment, have built this industry, which is strategic for our country. Nothing was impossible for them, and they treated challenges as opportunities. Now it is also people who make up our ArcelorMittal Poland branch in Dąbrowa Górnicza. As the heirs of the great Katowice Steelworks, we appreciate all our partners, representatives of local government, representatives of the social side, former and current employees – it is you who support us in development and transformation – these words of chairman of ArcelorMittal Poland Wojciech Koszuta were spoken during today's ceremony by Grzegorz Maracha, Director of the Primary Operations and Member of the Management Board of ArcelorMittal Poland. – “I would like to thank all the employees from the bottom of my heart - both those who are with us today and those who have created the history of the steelworks in the past years. Thank you for your work, loyalty and daily effort " he added.

During the ceremonial meeting commemorating the beginning of Huta Katowice, Włodzimierz Bednarski, chairman of the Management Board of the SITPH branch in Dąbrowa Górnicza, who has been actively working for the integration of the metallurgical community for years and cooperates with the industry, local governments and educational institutions, organizing numerous initiatives to popularize knowledge about metallurgy and its role in the economy, also spoke.

"The jubilee year of the 50th anniversary of production in Huta Katowice is a special moment of reflection on the history, achievements and significance of metallurgy for Dąbrowa Górnicza and the entire region. The Association of Engineers and Technicians of the Metallurgical Industry Dąbrowa Górnicza Branch, ArcelorMittal Poland and the Sztygarka Municipal Museum are the organizers of events commemorating 50 years of metallurgical production in Dąbrowa Górnicza. It is an expression of gratitude to those who have built the brand and strength of the Dąbrowa steelworks over the years with their knowledge, work and commitment, and a significant contribution to this development was also made by national universities, the scientific and research community and engineers associated in SITPH, supporting modern technologies and innovative solutions in metallurgy – emphasized Włodzimierz Bednarski, chairman of the Management Board of the SITPH branch in Dąbrowa Górnicza.

This year, Zagłębie and Silesia are celebrating half a century of the plant that shaped the foundation of the modern steel industry on the Vistula. “To say that this is only a solid foundation of metallurgy in Poland is like saying nothing. Huta Katowice has shaped the entire industrial region of Silesia and Zagłębie, it has also shaped thousands of people's lives - because it has grown into the lives of the plant's employees, provided them with jobs, was the host and center of cultural events in the area”- wrote chairman Wojciech Koszuta.

"For fifty years, the Huta Katowice has been an inseparable part of the history of our city and the everyday life of its residents. It is safe to say that without the steelworks, there would be no today's Dąbrowa Górnicza. Its creation was a huge undertaking. It was built by almost 50 thousand people, and together with the steelworks, the foundations of the development of the entire city were created – housing estates, schools, roads and places where the everyday life of new residents took place. Over the years, it has been the breadwinner of many families, the center of local activity, a place of work, but also the source of our urban identity" said Marcin Bazylak, Mayor of Dąbrowa Górnicza. "Today, although the reality has changed, the steelworks still remains an important plant and an important part of the city's economy. And although the plant faces new challenges, I believe that it is possible to combine industrial tradition with care for the environment, the comfort of life of residents and the future of Dąbrowa Górnicza” summed up the president.
