The 180-meter chimney of the coking plant in Zdzieszowice has disappeared from the panorama of the city. This is part of the ongoing modernization worth PLN 250 million

The demolition of the chimney of the Zdzieszowice CHP plant at the ArcelorMittal Poland coking plant, which has been ongoing since March, is coming to an end. The spectacular 180-meter chimney of this plant was replaced by a building twice as low. The old chimney is dismantled using the so-called "eating" method, and a dozen or so people work on the construction site every day. The demolition worth PLN 3 million is part of a large modernization project at the coking plant in Zdzieszowice, which has already consumed PLN 250 million.

The huge chimney from the 1970s is no longer needed in the Zdzieszowice heat and power plant, so its demolition began in March. – Due to the proximity of the working installations in the hydrocarbons department and coke oven batteries, we could not demolish the chimney by detonation. We decided on a time-consuming, but less invasive method of "eating", i.e. successive crushing and dismantling of the chimney inwards. The pace of work depended on weather conditions, but everything went according to plan ," explains Artur Adamowicz, support manager at the ArcelorMittal Poland coking plant in Zdzieszowice.

A dozen or so people work on the construction site every day. A special excavator for demolishing the chimney first crushed the structure from the top to a height of 16 meters, and now heavy equipment is dismantling the rest of the chimney.

The demolition of the old chimney and the construction of a new chimney is part of a large-scale modernization of the Zdzieszowice coking plant. The plant is under construction of an installation for the reduction of nitrogen oxides in flue gases and the modernization of three boilers of the CHP plant. In addition, the coke oven gas expansion tank is also being rebuilt, which allows to stabilize the pressure of this gas in the internal network.

The modernization works will be completed by 2026. – All the projects that we are currently implementing at the coking plant in Zdzieszowice will consume PLN 250 million, which is – due to the extension of the scope of work – PLN 85 million more than the amount we reported last year. Their effect will not only be a reduction in the environmental impact of the branch, but also in the energy security of the plant and residents, because the ArcelorMittal Poland CHP plant supplies the municipal network supplying heat to apartments in Zdzieszowice ," sums up Czesław Sikorski, Vice President of the Management Board of ArcelorMittal Poland and Managing Director for Coke Production.
