Another set of environmental projects at ArcelorMittal Poland’s Unit in Dąbrowa Górnicza underway

ArcelorMittal Poland’s Unit in Dąbrowa Górnicza Unit, former Huta Katowice, is carrying out another set of projects which will reduce its environmental footprint. Three electrostatic precipitators are being built, i.a. for coke and iron ore reloading station, which is situated in the neighborhood of residential area at the crossroads of Koksownicza and Kazdębie Streets. Investments worth PLN 30 m will be completed still this year.

Due to the installation of the huge hybrid filters at the sinter plant, the emissions from the 250 m tall chimney will be reduced by six times. However, it is not the end of the investments at Dabrowa Górnicza plant. The steel plant in Dabrowa Górnicza does not stop at this point and is modernizing the dedusting systems of other sinter plant installations. Two out of three new electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) will be responsible for dedusting the unloading station and sinter coolers of belts no 1 and 3. The electrostatic precipitator no. 3 will be used for dedusting the coke and iron ore reloading station

Electrostatic precipitators are huge installations, whose size can be compared to this of a block of flats. Two such installations dedicated to sinter coolers are 24 m long and 10 m high. The ESP for coke and iron ore reloading stations is slightly smaller, it differs it length, which is 18 m. ESPs are used to dedust flue gases by attracting electrified particles of dust to the collecting electrode. There are two kinds of electrodes. One of them are to charge positively dust coming through them, so that it can be attracted by the negatively charged electrodes. The dedusting efficiency of in installed electrofilters is 99,95 percent.

Takie elektrofiltry odpylają gaz poprzez przyciąganie naelektryzowanych cząstek pyłu do elektrod zbiorczych.

The new ESPs will replace the current dedusting installations. The projects which we are implementing will allow for replacing the current dedusting systems with new solutions. The new ESPs will be very efficient, reliable and less energy-consuming – informs Sebastian Tynior, project manager at the Engineering Office of ArcelorMittal Poland.

The new installations will allow for twofold reduction of dust: from 60 mg/Nm3 to less than 30 mg/Nm3. Moreover, the new ESP at the crossroads of Koksownicza and Kazdębie streets will be equipped in fans, which will contribute to noise level reduction. All ESPs will be commissioned still this year.

- These works are a part of the PLN 700 m investment programme, which we are implementing in Dabrowa Górnicza. It includes the modernization of the dedusting system at the steel shop, which will allow us to increase the dedusting efficiency threefold, the new dedusting system for the sinter plant, thanks to which we will be able to reduce emissions by six times and the construction of desox-denox installation at TAMEH POLSKA, thanks to which dust emissions will be reduced by 90 percent. Quite soon the residents will be able to feel the effects of those investments – says Tomasz Ślęzak, member of the Board of Directors at ArcelorMittal Poland, in charge of Energy and Environmental Protection.
