Educational path “Decomposition from waste” in Zdzieszowice

The ecological association Osiedlok obtained the “green minigrant” to promote active leisure, to educate on ecology and to enhance citizens’ participation in ongoing social projects in the residential estate Osiedle Stare in Zdzieszowice.

Created within the framework of a programme “I act, I help, I am a volunteer” educational path “Decomposition from waste”,  includes 10 information boards on waste management, segregation and recycling. Content of these boards was prepared by the “Clean Region” Intercommunal Association.

Volunteers together with the association’s members have established a desirable place for environmental education, suitable for outdoor classes and surrounded by trees and plants planted thanks to the project.

Next to the walking path, benches made of pallets were installed. The other installation is an aquarium, which symbolizes “the second life of death”. This sculpture is made of waste covered with grass and plants growing out of it. Through a glass walls visitors can observe the process of decomposition.

The idea of creating this educational path was to display it in the most accessible manner possible to children and youth from schools and kindergartens who can take classes over there.

- Having in mind the importance of the environmental education and growing awareness, especially among the youngest people, we want to continue transforming the surroundings – says Marek Skóra, member of the Osiedlok association and employee of the coke plant in Zdzieszowice.

- In cooperation with the neighbouring primary school no. 2, we are planning to fill the closest area with sculptures made of recyclable fabrics, build an outdoor climbing wall from old and used car tires, and provide wooden objects of small architecture. This way we will create a pleasant place for the local society – he adds.
