Transformation of the steel industry is a fact. The question is: how? About the future of the industry at the European Steel Congress 2023

The first European Steel Congress STEEL 2023 in Katowice (September 18-19) gathered in the spaces of the International Congress Center in Katowice all those who care about continuing steel production in Poland.

The invited guests discussed the future of the sector, the challenges it must face and the transformation, which is inevitable but full of dilemmas. Among the speakers there were also our representatives: Tomasz Ślęzak, member of the management board of ArcelorMittal Poland and Piotr Gluzewicz - member of the management board of ArcelorMittal Recykling Polska Sp. z o. o. and president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Scrap Management.

In discussions on the sustainable transformation of the steel industry and scrap as a strategic raw material on this path, we emphasized our position.

- Expectations towards the steel industry are growing. They are determined by increasingly restrictive climate policy, and the transformation of the sector is inevitable. It must be remembered that it will be based on electrical processes in which scrap will play a key role. This will be a replacement of blast furnaces with electric furnaces - said Tomasz Ślęzak during the STEEL 2023 congress. - Currently, we are dealing with a surplus of scrap in Poland, but if we go towards the electric transformation, in the future we will face a deficit and an increase in costs - he added.

Scrap is an ideal material in the concept of a circular economy. It can be recycled and reused many times.

- In Poland, the level of scrap recycling is very high. We are able to recover the entire raw material and reuse it - emphasized Piotr Gluzewicz from ArcelorMittal Recykling Polska.

During the congress, technological solutions enabling increasingly modern steel production and its use in construction and energy were also presented.
