ArcelorMittal Poland to spend PLN 120 m on modernization of its Sosnowiec plant

ArcelorMittal Poland has decided to carry out an extensive modernization of its wire rod mill in Sosnowiec. The objective of the undertaking is primarily improvement of product quality. The cost of the project amounts to PLN 120 m.

ArcelorMittal Poland’s Unit in Sosnowiec, former Huta Cedler, is starting the preparations for the modernization of its wire rod mill. The works shall be divided into two stages. The first one has been planned for autumn next year. The second one shall take place in autumn 2019. The cost of the project amounts to almost PLN 120 m.

Safety, quality and volume

The scope of works includes replacement of numerous pieces of equipment, including drives and rolling devices and their control systems. This will improve the line reliability and the safety of its operation. Moreover, the modification and replacement of certain parts will allow for improvement of quality of the products offered and for the increase of the rolling speed to 100 m per second. As a result of this, the mill’s capacity will increase from 700 thousand to 800 thousand tonnes per year.

- This investment is our response to the fact that the demand for high quality value added products among our customers is growing – explains Sanjay Samaddar, chairman of the board at ArcelorMittal Poland. – However, we invest in high added value products also due to the fact that we hope that they will allow us to survive on the market. The fact that the 4th phase of the EU ETS (European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme) is coming into force constitutes a serious threat to the competitiveness of the European steelmaking. The reality is that even the most efficient steel plants in Europe are going to see cost increases because of the scheme, which doesn’t provide a level playing field and exposes European steelmakers to costs that will not have to be borne by our global peers – he adds.

Wire rod is used for production of i.a.: springs, screws, nails and bolts, as well as supermarket trolleys, car shock absorbers and wipers, garden hoses, wire fences and tyre cords.

The plant in Sosnowiec currently employs ca. 400 persons.
