Steel plant from scratch” is the title of an interactive reportage on ArcelorMittal Poland Kraków Unit. The title reflects the enormous changes that the facility has undergone over its history. The steel plant started operating in 1954, but reached its peak production capacities in the 70s when it was producing almost 7 million tonnes of steel per year, while using 5 blast furnaces and 12 coke batteries. Currently, there is one modern coke battery operating there and one blast furnace, while production level is 5 times lower. What is emphasised in the article is that since 2004 – when Polskie Huty Stali was privatised – ArcelorMittal has invested PLN 6 billion in its Polish units. A half of this amount was invested in Kraków. As a result, the Kraków steel plant has managed to reduce dust emissions by almost 90% and decreased CO2 emissions by 25%, while at the same time reducing the level of noise generated by its facilities. It took several months to create a reportage.
